China’s Seafood Imports Surge Again in July

Seafood exporters around the world will be buoyed to hear of another big month of Chinese seafood imports.

Chinese customs figures released this week show the country imported CNY 8.41 billion ($1.17bn) worth of seafood in July, up a massive 31% in dollar terms compared with the same month in 2018.

It means China has imported seafood worth $7.96bn in the first seven months of this year, up 28% y-o-y.

The figures do not include imports of fishmeal or certain types of preserved seafood, such as canned tuna.

The surge in imports is largely due to a crackdown in smuggling from Vietnam, with importers increasingly using official Chinese ports of entry.
