China will replace the U.S. as the biggest importer of Vietnam-sourced pangasius in 2017, said the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
In the fourth quarter of last year, China, including Hong Kong, overtook U.S, pangasius imports from Vietnam, the association said.
In August-September last year, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the EU reached $20 million-$21 million a month while those to China amounted to $30 million-$31million monthly, almost equal to sales to the U.S.
In 2016, Vietnam’s pangasius exports estimated to reach $1.66 billion, up 7% from the previous year and accounting for 24% of total seafood export revenues.
In 2017, Vietnam’s pangasius exports forecasted to value at over $1.7 billion, up 4% year on year.
